Back in the army where Trent used to work as a martial arts instructor, someone else has taken his place. In fact, she happened to get along quite well with Trent. Stephanie Cobain was simply an army recruit, but when they noticed her fighting skills they put her in Trent’s place as soon as he left.
Stephanie walked back to her dormitory, wearily. She had just worked her butt off trying to teach another recruit some proper punches. She had to admit, he was kind of hopeless. It had been a long day and she had a single desire to drop on the floor and fall asleep. Every bone in her shuddered with relief as she opened the dormitory door. She flopped on the bed and closed her eyes.
“Tough day?”
“Huh?” Stephanie reopened her eyes and saw a dark face topped with braids peering down at her. Cassandra Thomas, her roommate smiled sympathetically at her from the top bunk.
“Tell me about it,” Stephanie rolled her eyes.
“There are some things for you in the mail. A weird package and a postcard from that guy, Trent.” Stephanie raised an eyebrow as Cassandra threw her a knowing smile. She took Trent’s postcard and admired the picture of a beautiful lake surrounded by thick forestry.
“Are you going to read it?” Cassandra interrupted. Stephanie glared at Cassandra, but she shook it off her back and read it aloud.
“Dear Steph, I hope everything is fine back there. Guess what? Remember when I told you I was undecided about what job I wanted to take? Well, instead of choosing, I became both! So now I am a P.I. and a Karate instructor! The Kids at my dojo are really nice I’m sure you’d like them, and they’d like you. Drop by whenever you can, O.K.? Love, Trent.”
“Hmm…love Trent…wonder what that means,” Cassandra teased.
“Cassandra!” Stephanie cried out indignantly.
“Oh come on, Steph, I’ve seen the guy. And he is fine!”
Stephanie looked at Cassandra cross-eyed, “Have you been going through my things?”
“Why?”
“Where did you see Trent?”
Cassandra’s eyes widened with guilt. “Well…I …you see…” she began.
“That’s O.K.,” Stephanie cut her off, “I go through your stuff too.”
“Hey!” Cassandra threw a pillow at Stephanie. They both giggled as it struck Stephanie in her face. After they both had a good laugh, Stephanie picked up the package.
“Wonder what
it could be,” she murmured, “There isn’t even a return address.” She ripped
open the brown envelope and pulled out a note and a cellular phone. When
she read the phone she dropped it in horror.
